Our Story

Escuela del Sol

Harwood Art Center is the community outreach program of Escuela del Sol, an independent, non-profit Montessori school founded in 1968. Harwood was started to build and sustain connections between the school and the neighborhood in which it is located, as well as the larger community of Albuquerque. The unique relationship between school and community art center provides limitless opportunities for personal and community-wide education, enrichment and growth through the arts.

Escuela del Sol is dedicated to instilling a passion for lifelong learning, and Harwood Art Center represents a palpable extension of this philosophy.

The Harwood Team

The Harwood Staff is responsible for the programming and daily operations of the Center, and includes the administrative staff of Escuela del Sol Montessori.

As a single organization, Harwood and Escuela share a Board of Trustees who facilitate the direction and philosophy of the organization. In addition to the Board of Trustees, Harwood also looks to several advisory committees for input to ensure that we meet the needs of our community.

The Escuela Mission

Escuela del Sol is an educational community that promotes the understanding of the interdependence of all life, values diversity and encourages students of all ages to discover the role each plays in contributing to his or her community. Escuela del Sol Montessori is a not-for-profit school that runs multiple programs including pre-K and elementary education, and Harwood, a community outreach program based in arts education and service.

Current Harwood Artist

I have been a Harwood Artist since 2001. Four different spaces, four different lifetimes and across media. Sometimes my studio has been a graphic arts workshop, sometimes a painting studio, sometimes a production pottery shop, but being here is always wonderful. From late nights preparing materials for art students to mornings doing pre-natal yoga while I waited for the older child to be done with his work at Escuela del Sol, it is wonderful to reflect on all the art adventures I’ve had over the years at Harwood. The very first night I lived in Albuquerque was spent at a film program at Harwood and from that moment I knew this was an organization I wanted to be involved with. That was 17 years ago and the dream of that first night has blossomed into a reality and a community of which I am proud to be a part!
